How to hide your age on a résumé (without lying)
By Cindy Summerfield, former legal recruiter · Updated October 2026
If you're over 55 and job hunting, you've probably wondered whether your résumé is quietly working against you. It's a fair worry. Age bias is real, even though U.S. law (the Age Discrimination in Employment Act) protects workers 40 and over. The good news: you don't need to fudge anything. You just need to stop handing over clues that have nothing to do with how well you'll do the job.
1. Remove graduation years
List your degree and school, and leave off the year. This is the single most common age giveaway, and leaving it off is completely standard.
2. Show the last 10–15 years in detail
Recruiters care most about what you've done recently. Detail the last 10–15 years, then add one line such as "Earlier career: progressive roles in operations at Acme and Beta Co." with no dates. That isn't hiding anything. It's editing.
3. Cut age-coded words
"Seasoned," "veteran," "30+ years of experience," and "decades" all say the same thing: older. Replace them with proof: "Led a team of 12 that cut processing time 30%."
4. Update your tech
Delete Lotus Notes, WordPerfect, Windows XP, and typing speed. List the tools you use today: Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Zoom, Slack, Salesforce. If your skills are dated, a short free course is worth a weekend.
5. Modernize your contact details
An AOL or Hotmail address is a small but real signal. A free firstname.lastname@gmail.com address and a custom LinkedIn URL show you're current. Drop your street address and fax number. City and state are enough.
6. Swap the objective for a summary
Objective statements went out of style years ago. Use a 2–3 line summary about the value you bring: "Operations leader who turns around under-performing teams and saves six-figure costs."
7. Put numbers in your bullets
This is where experienced candidates undersell themselves most, often out of modesty and sometimes out of fear. "Managed the front office" becomes "Ran a 6-person front office supporting 120 staff; cut supply costs 22%." Think about team size, budgets, revenue, percentages, time saved, and volume handled. Honest estimates are fine.
8. Delete "References available upon request"
Everyone knows. It just uses up a line and dates the document.
